Teens and Adults Don't Always See The Same Signals
U.S. News and World Report, 8/9/1999

A test conducted by neuropsychologists at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts may explain why teens and adults don’t always see eye to eye. The test, used to study brain development, used 15 adults and 15 teenagers.

In the test, subjects were asked to identify the correct emotion of people in pictures they were shown. When shown a photo of a fearful person, all of the adults identified the correct emotion of fear, while 11 teens said the person was angry or in discomfort.

According to neuropsychologists, this test shows that teens were using the emotion center of the brain more than the region of the brain tied to judgment that adults use more.

This shows a different form of thinking in teens and could explain why teenagers behave the way they do.
