West Virginia continues statewide gun lock giveaway
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and the governor’s office are teaming to distribute 50,000 cabled gun locks around the state, the single largest distribution of gun locks ever. The locks work on handguns, rifles and shotguns and are applied by weaving the cable into the firing chamber and then securing it with a lock and key.

Ferndale Police Department to hand out free gun locks
The Ferndale Police Department is now handing out free gun locks to registered gun owners or those who come in to register a new gun. Police recently received about 1,400 of the locks, which resemble a bicycle lock with a cable that can be inserted through the breach of a gun, rendering it inoperable.

Cheboygan offers gun safety locks
About 200 gun safety locks are currently being offered to residents free of charge by a local law enforcement agency as part of the new concealed weapons law. The free gun locks stemmed from part of a statute that included a mandate that Michigan State Police work with local law enforcement agencies to promote gun safety.

As part of a project sponsored by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, 60,000 gun locks will be distributed, free of charge, across the state in order to help make guns safer. Although King County did not participate in a program last year that distributed 4,000 gun locks, the free locks will be available this year through the King County's Sheriff's Office.

Texas police departments have begun to distribute gun locks for free as part of Project Child Safe, a five-year, $5 million state-funded program. The program which was created by then, Governor George W. Bush. The program was delayed by problems with the gun locks, which have since been corrected. They can be used on handguns and on many rifles and shotguns. They typically retail for $10. Project Child Safe plans to give away 750,000 gun locks this year.

A gun-safety program that will include the giveaway of 1,500 cable safety locks was launched Monday morning at the Yellowstone County Courthouse. Each kit will come with a cable lock and instruction booklet. At no cost to the city of Vancouver, Vancouver Police Services is distributing gun locks and gun- handling safety brochures to the first 3,500 gun owners who are interested. While new guns often come equipped with safe-handling devices, people with older guns will benefit from the freebie.

The Leechburg Area School District will receive 500 gun locks to pass out to district residents in an effort to promote gun safety. Any Leechburg Area School District resident can come to the Leechburg High School cafeteria between 5 and 9 p.m. on August 28 to receive as many as two gun locks.

Within the next month, Alarm It Inc., a Naples marketer and distributor of safety devices, will release the Smart Trigger Lock, a trigger lock with an electronic keypad system, alarm and motion sensor all powered by a microprocessor. The lock is aimed at preventing gun accidents by keeping firearms in the hands of those authorized to use them and reducing the possibility of guns being fired accidentally.

Savannah Police received an extra shipment of 2,000 gun locks to hand out to gun owners earlier this week. But they're going fast -- there are only about 1,000 left. The locks are being offered for free at local precincts, thanks to a partnership with nonprofit Project Home Safe, said police spokesman Bucky Burnsed.

Canton Rotary Club, with the aid of the Massillon and Alliance Rotary clubs, hopes to have at least another $57,100, which they gave away Saturday to owners willing to give up their weapons in exchange for $100 bills.

Clermont, Ohio ready to offer gun locks
Clermont is poised to become the first local Ohio county to offer a countywide giveaway of gun locks. A shipment of 5,000 key-activated trigger locks arrived Tuesday at the Miami Township fire department. They are expected to be available to the public through each police and fire department in the county by Monday.

Walter Drury picked up two free trigger locks for a brother who has two guns and two curious children. Drury, an X-ray technician at the General Hospital Center in Passaic, was among nearly 70 hospital employees and city residents who obtained locks. "A trigger lock is another obstacle that makes it harder for kids to pick up a gun and do something like the things you hear about in the news." said Drury.

Richard Vance, however, is giving away 1,000 trigger locks Tuesday in a promotion with country- music radio station WHOK (95.5 FM). "We don't want to see kids hurt by guns," Vance said. "Some customers may lock up all of their guns but one. But some people forget they've got the one or where they put it" or whether it's loaded. Heather Horton, K95's program coordinator, said, "With summer approaching and more kids being home, we wanted to do something to promote gun safety."

A Williamson County civic group, the Optimist Club, is working to gather support and donations to sponsor trigger lock give aways. The group hopes to expand their efforts to Nashville and surrounding areas where children are also at risk from improperly stored guns.

Connecticut based program distributes 50,000 gun locks nationwide
Project HomeSafe is sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun industry trade organization. Participating cities receive free "Putting A Lock On Safety" kits paid for by contributions from companies participating in the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund. Each kit includes a firearms safety curriculum, a cable-style gun lock and a lock instruction sheet. Project HomeSafe began six months ago. So far, 50,000 gun locks have been handed out in 30 cities nationwide. The program is aimed at distributing as many as 1 million locks over the next three years.
